Our History:
In December 1969, a committee was formed to explore a home-delivered meal service in Bega, initiated by community members who saw a need for meals for those unable to cook for themselves. Deliveries began in February 1970. Over time, independent meal services were established in Merimbula, Tathra, Pambula, Eden, Bermagui, Candelo, and Bemboka, all run by volunteers.
Funding from the Home and Community Care Program (HACC) in 1993 supported services for frail aged individuals and younger people with disabilities. By 2001, a cooperative merged these services, expanding to include social support and respite care.
In 2011, the Toussaint Centre opened, and in 2017, funding transitioned to the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP). Now employing seven staff, Bega Valley Meals on Wheels relies on over 100 volunteers for service delivery.
